As a Volunteer Camp Nurse at YMCA Camp Kirkwood, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of campers and staff. You’ll provide front-line medical care, support wellness education, and help maintain a safe, caring, and fun camp environment.

Key Responsibilities Provide first aid and basic medical care to campers and staff (scrapes, bumps, illness, etc.) Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications according to camp policy and doctor’s orders Oversee health intake: review health forms at check-in, identify potential issues (allergies, chronic conditions, etc.) Maintain the infirmary / medical-station: stocking supplies, keeping the area clean and organized Handle emergency response when needed, including contacting EMS if required and following camp’s emergency protocols Document all health care interactions: treatments, medication given, health incidents, etc. Collaborate with camp leadership, counselors, and staff to promote healthy habits: hydration, sun safety, mosquito protection, hygiene Provide guidance and reassurance to campers (and sometimes parents) about health concerns Ensure confidentiality of medical records and privacy of individuals under care

Staff Screening & Training: All volunteer staff must undergo background checks and references. Health & Medical Protocols: The camp infirmary operates under nurse supervision; you’ll maintain medical logs, handle medications according to policy, and enforce hygiene practices (hand washing, etc.). Activity Safety: For all camp activities (including water, ropes challenge, sports), safety measures will be in place: certified lifeguards, proper equipment, supervision, and safety checks. Behavior & Conduct: Volunteers assist in upholding the camp’s code of conduct. Any dangerous or inappropriate behavior by campers or staff must be reported and addressed according to camp policy. Confidentiality & Reporting: All medical records, health information, and incidents are confidential. Any concerns about health, safety, or well-being of a camper or staff must be reported to camp leadership immediately.

All volunteer commitments must be confirmed in writing (email or form) ahead of time. If you need to cancel your volunteer commitment, please notify Camp Kirkwood at least two (2) weeks prior to your scheduled start date. Cancellation less than two weeks before start will require notification as soon as possible; while there is no fee for volunteers, late cancellations may impact camp staffing, and you may be asked to help with a make-up schedule or assist in a different role if possible. In cases of emergencies (health, family, etc.), please communicate promptly; we will work with you to adjust.
